There is a growing trend right now and it’s not a good one…military style workouts are all over the place; this in and of itself is not a bad thing. The issue arises when our fitness mentality turns into never ever stop, push through the pain and work till you puke, which is not a healthy mentality. We push our physical and mental boundaries well past what we are comfortable with, which just results in completely tearing down our bodies. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for pushing yourself outside your comfort zone; our bodies will never change and evolve if we don’t. But this competitive mentality that exists in our fitness realm is an unhealthy one. Fitness, by definition, is the condition of being psychically fit and healthy. How are we promoting “healthy” when we are working so hard to compete with the ripped girl next to us in Crossfit, instead of working within our own capabilities, that we are injuring our bodies in the process? It is at this point where fitness becomes an obligation, a drudgery rather than something fun which we enjoy. It’s time that we start honoring our bodies; knowing how to push passed our comfort zones, but also knowing where our limits are. Our bodies are meant to move; but they are also meant to be sustainable. You’ve only got one body to last you your entire life! Value movement, move with purpose, but honor your body.
